Established in 1909, New England Stud is nestled in the breathtaking landscapes of the Drakensberg Mountains, just 36 km from Underberg, KwaZulu-Natal. We are dedicated to the careful breeding, rearing, and training of Nooitgedachter ponies.
We maintain a diverse range of bloodlines to ensure the vitality and versatility of our Nooitgedachters. Our breeding programme focuses on producing ponies that excel as all-rounders, capable of performing in various disciplines such as dressage, show jumping, endurance, and more.

HARDINESS:
Nooitgedachters are the oldest recognised South African breed, with origins tied to the Basotho Pony. They are extremely surefooted and boast exceptional endurance and strength. Raised in the Drakensberg Mountains, these ponies develop hardy hooves and a remarkable ability to thrive on tough veld grass. They are known for their energy efficiency and excellent health.
ECONOMICAL:
Thanks to generations of careful breeding, these ponies thrive on a roughage-based diet. Their energy efficiency means they rarely require additional feeding to maintain condition. Their natural hardiness and robust health make them less prone to common injuries and illnesses.
VERSATILITY:
Although originally bred as working horses, Nooitgedachters are exceptional all-rounders. They excel in multiple disciplines including showing, dressage, endurance, driving, and eventing.
TEMPERAMENT:
With an inherent affinity for people and fantastic trainability, they make wonderful children's ponies and reliable mounts for busy adult riders. They don’t need to be ridden every day to remain safe and responsive, making them ideal for riders with demanding schedules.

MEET OUR MAJESTIC SHIRES
Drakensberg Stud is our small-scale Shire horse breeding project. These magnificent horses have an imposing presence but are quiet and gentle at heart.
They make wonderful companions and riding horses. Our breeding project features imported bloodlines, with both of our stallions and three of our mares originally from the United Kingdom.
As this is a boutique project, only a very limited number of these beautiful horses are available for sale. We also offer live coverings by our stud stallions.
